Public consultation on extension of RoHS exemption for mercury UV lamps

The European Commission tasked a consortium with the assessment of the extension of exemption requests under RoHS (EU Directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment), including exception 4(f) for mercury discharge lamps. These lamps are used, among other purposes, for UV-based curing of coatings (inks, silicones and adhesives). LED-based alternatives are being developed, but they are not yet suitable for all uses. The extension of the exemption was submitted by LightingEurope and VDMA.

FINAT (and some FINAT members) submitted feedback to the public consultation which closed on May 27.
