ECS 2011: WACKER Presents New Binders, Silicone Products and Hybrid Technologies for Coatings, Construction, Adhesives & Sealants

Munich, March 29, 2011 – Under the motto "Our in expertise," the Munich-based WACKER Group will present innovative polymer and silicone products, and novel hybrid technologies, for the coatings, construction, adhesives and sealants industries at the European Coatings Show (ECS) in Nuremberg, from March 29 to 31, 2011. For durable industrial coatings, WACKER will showcase not only surface-coating resins and a new silicone intermediate, but also solid resins and pyrogenic silicas. For the construction sector, the spotlight is on facades, water proofing and long-term protection: Novel composite dispersions enable bright facades in radiant colors, liquid hybrid polymers allow for waterproofing surfaces, and new polymeric binders and silicone additives enable versatile demanding indoor and outdoor formulations. As for the adhesives and sealants sector, WACKER’s ECS portfolio will range from products for flooring adhesives and the wood-glue sector, through the paper and packaging industry, to paintable silicone sealants and high-strength assembly adhesives. Technical presentations and vivid exhibits round out WACKER’s ECS program.

At the ECS 2011, WACKER is showcasing its expertise in the core areas of Industrial Coatings, Construction, and Adhesives & Sealants on a floor space totaling 230 square meters. The focus is on the quality, performance and added-value advantages (the “plus”) that WACKER offers through its products and technologies, some of which will be on view in elaborate exhibits. In addition, around 60 technical experts will be on hand for informative discussions with existing and prospective customers.

Expertise Area: Industrial Coatings
A new, solventless, liquid silicone resin intermediate – SILRES® IC 368 – enables durable and highly weatherable coatings. This product can be used to modify industrial coatings for wood, metal or sheet metal strips.
Equally as versatile is the broad VINNOL® range of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymers, both with and without functional groups. Typical applications are gravure and screen printing inks, inkjet inks, heat-sealing coatings for metallic or metalized substrates, polymer coatings and wood varnishes. A new grade offering excellent solubility in ester dispenses with ketones and is eminently suitable for heat-sealed closure systems, such as pharmaceutical and food packaging. Solid polyvinyl acetate resins for coatings and primers and pyrogenic silica for formulating low-solvent coatings, such as automotive finishes, round out the range available for demanding applications in the Industrial Coatings area.

Expertise Area: Construction
This year, WACKER’s focus here is on facades, protection against moisture, and durability. One highlight is a novel composite dispersion technology from the VINNAPAS® range that combines inorganic silica particles with organic polymer particles to yield renders and facade paints that have long-lasting colors, reduced dirtpickup and a lower risk of algal or fungal attack. Other highlights include newly developed dispersible polymer powders that are ideal for hydrophobic formulations, e.g. for energy-saving exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS). These combine well with SILRES® silicone resin plaster to provide long-lasting, robust and highly flexible facade protection. These properties stem from the fact that silicone additives from WACKER hold moisture and environmental influences at bay – the latest developments are also ideal for indoor paints. For all-round indoor and outdoor use, innovative VINNAPAS® copolymer dispersions based on vinyl chloride, ethylene and vinyl acetate are also available.

Eco-friendly, reliable paints and facade applications are also catered for. WACKER will showcase a number of dispersions that – depending on the grade – enable formulations without plasticizers and additional solvents, have a low formaldehyde content and are produced without the use of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO). Another product that does not require a mandatory hazard warning label is GENIOSIL® W – a novel liquid sealing technology for large expanses, such as flat roofs, terraces and basement walls. GENIOSIL® W combines the positive properties of polyurethanes and silicones in a single product.

Expertise Area: Adhesives & Sealants
WACKER is also coming to the ECS 2011 with a wide range of products for adhesives and sealants. It is unveiling a series of VINNAPAS® binder dispersions designed to formulate adhesives for demanding flooring, paper and packaging, and water-resistant wood glues. Its innovative GENIOSIL® STP-E technology, which is based on highly reactive alpha-silanes, is intended for rapid-curing, one-pack adhesives and sealants, e.g. for automotive and container construction and for bonding parquet floors. HDK® pyrogenic silica from WACKER is an important ingredient for controlling the rheology of epoxy or vinyl ester adhesives typically used, for example, in the production of modern wind-turbine installations.

Again, environmental and safety aspects feature prominently in adhesives and sealants. Here, WACKER is presenting new products that allow for formulations without are plasticizers and additional solvents, that eliminate the need for APEO-containing compounds and tin, have a low formaldehyde content and do not require reactive co-monomers or external crosslinker.
Note: Press releases are available with detailed information on the products mentioned in the three areas of expertise.
