Collano Group: Semi-annual report 2011

The Collano Group, the adhesives specialist headquartered in Sempach Station near Luzern, generated sales of CHF 60.1 million (previous year CHF 61.3 million) in the first half of 2011. This corresponds to a decline of 2%. The Group expects the 2011 fiscal year to close with a sales and EBIT decrease versus the prior year. The constant demand for specialty adhesives in the industrial markets is reassuring. However, the strong Swiss franc and rising raw material prices will have a heavy burden on the consolidated result.

Markets

Demand in the international industrial markets is brisk. Specialty adhesives for applications in technical textiles, automotive interiors, and airbags are gaining momentum. The demand for adhesives in the domain of energy generation, for instance in photovoltaics and wind power, is picking up as well. The advance in specialty adhesives sales for construction applications also remains robust. The new "Engineering" unit, through which Collano Group member nolax offers counsel and services in bonding technologies, is making encouraging progress.

Purbond joint venture

Collano has transferred its 50% interest in Purbond to Henkel. Effective April 1, Henkel became the sole owner of Purbond, previously operated as a joint venture by Collano and Henkel.

Expansion of the Schmitten plant

The sizeable demand for adhesive films has prompted Collano Services Extrusion AG in Schmitten to expand its production capacity. Plans are underway to add a new extrusion system for the production of multi-layer adhesive films and to build a new warehouse. The investment involved amounts to approximately CHF 11 million. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2012.
