ABRAFATI 2019 WACKER Showcases Polymeric Binders and Silicones for Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants

WACKER is presenting new polymer- and silicone-based products for the manufacture of coatings, adhesives and sealants at ABRAFATI 2019. The Group’s exhibits feature technology for formulating wall paints in powder form, polymer dispersions for bituminous coatings, and binders for mineral-based skim coats. The focus is also on a new silicone resin binder for exterior paints, as well as on a silane-based protective coating for concrete and flowing-screed floors. ABRAFATI is Latin America’s largest tradeshow for paints and coatings and takes place from October 1 to 3 in São Paulo, Brazil.

WACKER is presenting dispersible polymer powders for making biocide-free wall paints for the first time in Latin America at ABRAFATI. Most paints are produced using water-based binders or raw materials. Water provides a favorable environment for microbes and bacteria, which is why biocides are commonly added when formulating paints.

The new spray-dried polymeric binders based on vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) enables the manufacture of wall paints in powder form. This technology can be applied without adding biocides and offers key transport and storage advantages because the resulting paints contain no water until they are redispersed just before use. The paints have a very low content of volatile organic compounds (< 1 g/l) and meet the requirements of the major environmental labels. They are also low-odor and free of organic solvents, plasticizers and film-forming agents. The polymers ensure a good adhesion and provide excellent spreading properties, hiding power and scrub resistance.

Reliable Facade Protection with New Silicone Resin Binder
Experts agree: exterior paints formulated with silicone resin emulsions offer the most efficient protection from moisture. This is achieved by the three-dimensional network binding silicone resins to the mineral substrate. Not only is this bond extremely water- and dirt-repellent, it is also breathable because it is permeable to water vapor. This protects the facade from moisture, and especially from heavy rain, while keeping it dry from the inside. Silicone resin paints thus combine the advantages of mineral-based and polymer-bound coatings.

At this year’s ABRAFATI, WACKER is presenting the binder SILRES® BS 6042 for the first time. It contains a novel silicone resin emulsion enabling the formulation of fast-drying, extremely long-lasting and dirt-resistant exterior paints. The water-based emulsion contains no organic solvents. Accordingly, it can be used in ecolabel-compliant paint formulations. Specially developed for the Latin American market, SILRES® BS 6042 additionally enables the formulation of plasters and exterior paints with high solids contents. High-quality silicone resin paints can be produced easily thanks to pigment-compatible properties.

Polymer Dispersion for Bituminous Coatings
WACKER is presenting VINNEVA®, its line of polymer dispersions for bituminous coatings, at ABRAFATI. Polymers make bitumen emulsions more flexible and more resistant to all kinds of mechanical stress. The binders enhance the properties of bitumen emulsions and ensure that the resulting coatings adhere excellently to concrete, brick and cement. VINNEVA® modified bitumen furthermore protects roofs and basements particularly well against ingress of water.

Binder for Mineral-Based Skim Coats
WACKER is also exhibiting an application for interior and exterior plasters at ABRAFATI. A skim coat consisting of cement, polymeric binders, fillers and various additives is often applied to achieve particularly fine, thin and smooth surfaces. VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powder based on vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) enhances the properties of the skim coat, ensuring enhanced adhesion to masonry, concrete or insulation panels and providing superior flexibility. The polymers additionally deliver good workability and excellent resistance to weathering.

Solutions for Dirt-Repellent Surfaces
For dirt-repellent surfaces, WACKER is presenting the dispersion PRIMIS® SAF 9000 and the concentrated anti-graffiti agent SILRES® BS 710. Its unique composition makes PRIMIS® SAF 9000 both oil-resistant and hydrophobic, meaning it protects wall paints against many different types of stains – from coffee and red wine to colored markers. SILRES® BS 710 is a one-component concentrated agent that protects against unpleasant graffiti attacks. After it is applied to the facade, the liquid silicone forms a permanent, elastic protective film on which spray paints, paints and stickers find no support. Graffiti can be washed off easily with water. Posters or signs that have been pasted onto walls can be removed easily, too.

Alternative Binder for Coating Concrete and Screed Floors
Based on alpha-silane technology, the SILRES® BS 6920 binder offers outstanding protection for concrete and flowing-screed floors in high-traffic areas. Thanks to its low viscosity, it penetrates deeply into the pores of cement-bound floors and fills them completely. A glossy, abrasion-resistant film forms on the surface and reliably protects the substrate against staining and dirt. Even substances that are left on the surface for some time can be removed without any lasting stains.

Adhesives and Sealants with New Properties
Modern adhesives and sealants are increasingly used – in the construction industry, in transportation and even in the energy industry. In addition to high tear strength, flexibility and weathering resistance, WACKER’s silane-terminated polymers offer good workability and enable increased throughput in the manufacture of adhesives. This fulfills important requirements imposed by today’s manufacturers and users on modern adhesive and sealant technologies.

At this year’s ABRAFATI, a special focus is placed on GENIOSIL® XB and GENIOSIL® XT. GENIOSIL® XB is suited for the formulation of high-performance adhesives with high tensile lap-shear strengths. GENIOSIL® XT, in turn, delivers highly elastic and extremely tear-resistant formulations. In contrast to many polyurethane-based products, these properties are attained without any solvents or isocyanates – and without using tin catalysts.
